Founded on June 28, 1920 at the University of Central Missouri (then called the Central Missouri State Teachers College), a new fraternity was born from the confidence of seventeen men in the belief that all men are social creatures and that the friendships made in college are of lasting importance. It rose as a result of bonds made while in military service during World War I, and by pledging themselves to the highest ideals of manhood, citizenship, and brotherhood, they inspired men across the country to follow the path to Sigma Tau Gamma (Sig Tau).

While less than a century old, the membership statistics for Sig Tau are impressive, with over 65,000 lifetime members, 2,000 collegiate members, and 70 chapters across the United States. It is the purpose of Sig Tau men to strive to become better men by improving themselves, and many Brothers have gone above and beyond, becoming recognized leaders in their chosen fields, such as Robert A. Libby (Inventor; Pringles Potato Chips), Red Miller (Former Head Coach; Denver Broncos), Bill Bright (Evangelist & Founder; Campus Crusade for Christ), and John Ashcroft (U.S. Senator, State of Missouri & Former U.S. Attorney General). With Brothers like these, it is easy to see why so many men want to wear the Sig Tau azure blue and white!

Considering the story of Sig Tau began at a teachers college, it is no surprise that the fraternity takes an active interest in the well-being of students through its philanthropic partnership with BACCHUS (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students). An international student-based movement for the prevention of alcohol-abuse by college students, BACCHUS seeks to teach and promote the responsible use of alcohol by those who choose to use it, looking out for the health and safety of all students.

It is fitting that the Badge of Sigma Tau Gamma contains both sword and shield, symbols of the chivalrous medieval knight, as all Brothers take an active role in protecting the well-being of all around them and holding themselves to a higher standard. Through dedication to the six principles of value, learning, leadership, excellence, benefit, and integrity, the men of Sigma Tau Gamma improve themselves, improve the Fraternity, and follow “A Path of Principles.”
